Both Porto Cristo and Cala Mandia belong to the municipality of Manacor, capital of the comarca of Llevant, which is found 8 and 12 km away respectively. This municipality is known throughout the world for the manufacture of artificial pearls which makes it worth visiting. You can also visit, among many other things, the Church and Cloister of Sant Vicenc Ferrer, the Church of Nostra Senyora dels Dolors, the Museu d'Historia of Manacor and the market which takes place every Monday morning.
In the municipal district of Manacor, 32km squared has been declared a natural area of special interest, over 6km of which corresponds to the open rocky coast through a group of virgin coves of great natural beauty. This space extends from s'Estany d'en Mas to Cales de Mallorca and, in addition to an extremely beautiful and unaltered coastal landscape, it has a great variety of flora and fauna which makes it ideal for hiking. Located in Porto Cristo and discovered by Pere Caldentey, they are globally recognised for their quality and unique tree-like formations. They were the first caves in Mallorca opened to the public in 1910. One hundred years ago, in 1912, they already had electricity for visitors. The incomparable beauty of these caves is highlighted by Lorenzo Caldentey, such of the discoverer. The caves contain various lakes with the Sea of Venice being the largest of all and on which the musical show Magical Mozart is offered every day as a tribute to the famous composer.
Located in the central Plaza del Carme, its construction took place between 1916 and 1922. It has a Neo-Roman style and is dedicated (as its name indicates) to the Mare de Deu del Carme, patron saint of fishermen and sailors. In 1957, it was extended and completed with the bell-tower following the same style. After the modification of the apse, it was inaugurated on the 10 July 1964 and already had its modern day appearance.
This is found just opposite the beach. It takes its name from a small sculpture which was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. In 1988, the year in which the centenary of the founding of Porto Cristo was celebrated, it was replaced by a mermaid-shaped sculpture made by Pere Pujol which is still there. There are various concerts and events, such as a small local market on Sundays in which a diverse range of local products can be found.
Les coves blanques are a group of natural caves on one floor which were touched up in the Talaiotic era. Before the foundation of the urban centre, they served as refuge for sailors and fishermen.
Located at the end of the Avinguda d'en Joan Servera Camps, this is a watch and signal tower built in the year 1577. It forms part of the network of coastal defence towers which alerted as to the presence of pirates on the coast. Thanks to its location, it offers magnificent views which make it a place of interest.
